Most teams overthink their first agent. The best first project is boring, frequent, and easy to check. Here’s the checklist we use with every new customer.
Pick a boring, frequent task
Look for work that happens every day, follows the same steps, and has a clear right answer. Researching new leads, triaging tickets, and filing documents are all great first projects.
Write instructions like you would for a new hire
Describe the job in plain language: what to look at, what good looks like, and when to ask for help. Two short paragraphs are usually enough.
Connect only what it needs
Give the agent access to the apps and records it needs for this job, nothing more. You can always add more later.
Run it on real work, with approvals on
Turn on approvals for every external action, run the agent on a day’s worth of real work, and review the results with the person who usually does the job.
